Storage and management of large amount of data is one of the key elements of cloud applications. SAP is one of the largest providers of business applications concentrated on the “big data and analytics” layer as it poses one of the most important challenges. Starting around 2008, a team from SAP, the Hasso Plattner Institute and Stanford University had designed and demonstrated a new application architecture named “Hassos New Architecture” or HANA including a high-performance search engine and an in-memory cache engine.

The product was extended in the following years and SAP announced a platform as a service product called the SAP HANA Cloud Platform including analytics, integration, IoT and security services in 2012.45 The HANA Cloud Platform is offered as a freemium cloud service with a rich set of subscription plans starting at $23 per user per month. Additionally, a managed private cloud service was announced as the HANA Enterprise Cloud service in 2013.46 In July 2016, SAP reported having 3700 corporate customers for its S4/HANA suite, compared with 900 a year before.
